The Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-governmental Affairs led by Senator Tijani Kaura (Chairman) and Senator Sulaiman Hunkuyi (Deputy Chairman) today as part of its oversight responsibilities visited State House, Abuja.
Kaura while addressing journalists over his committee’s visit to the seat of power said the constitution of Nigeria empowers him and his colleagues to carry out oversight function to see whether what the executive is doing is in line with the Appropriation Act.
Similarly, Senator Hunkuyi said the fund released so far for capital projects in the 2016 budget is second to none in the last sixteen years.
He said there is need to know whether the level of capital project execution is commessrable with the funds released so far.
According to Hunkuyi who said in the course of oversight, visited several agencies, reiterated “fund releases for capital projects in this present government is second to none in the last sixteen years.”
The Permanent Secretary, State House, Jalal Arabi however while making his remarks over the Oversight visit of the Senators, said the State House Budget is made up of seven distinct cost centers.
These according to him include State House headquarters, State House Operations (Office of the President and Vice President), Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Security Officer to the President, State House Medical Center and State House Liason Office, Lagos.
He said about N3b has so far been released for capital project in 2016 budget while N2.7b has also be released for recurrent expenditure.
The Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs had earlier visited the National Hajj Commission in the course of the Oversight visits.
Though the Chairman of the Hajj Commission, Abdullahi Mohammed said the leadership of the commission is making efforts to reduce the burden of Hajj operations on the Government by 2018, he however lamented that up to date, the commission is still operating in the rented apartment.
